Protect Your Natural Stone the Right Way

Follow our step-by-step guide to properly seal natural stone countertops and keep them protected from stains, water penetration, and long-term damage.

Directions on how to apply sealer to natural stone countertops

  1. Confirm your surface is natural stone.
  2. Countertop surfaces (countertop, backsplash, edge, etc.) need to be clean, dry, and free from stains.
  3. Shake the sealer bottle.
  4. Transfer the sealer from the bottle to a larger container.
  5. Apply the sealer liberally and evenly over countertops using a clean paintbrush, allowing the sealer to soak in for approximately 30 minutes.
  6. Some areas of the countertop may absorb the sealer in a shorter period of time. This is normal and indicates an additional application may be required.
  7. Do not allow the sealer to dry on the countertop.
  8. Buff off any residual sealer with a non–microfiber towel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my natural stone countertops need to be sealed?

A simple water test should tell you when it is time to apply sealer to all natural stone
countertops. On several areas of your countertop puddle a small amount of water, roughly the
size of a 1/2 dollar, and allow it to remain untouched for 15 minutes. Wipe up the water and
visually determine if the water is penetrating the stone. The area will appear darker “Ghost
Stain” if the water is penetrating. If there is no change in appearance, your sealer is working
properly and your countertops do not need to be re-sealed.

Disclaimer

The “Ghost Stain” left from penetrating water should evaporate shortly after cleanup. However,
some quartzites hold water longer than most other stones. This may extend evaporation times for certain quartzites.

Be careful with calcareous Marbles. Minerals in water can slightly etch some marble surfaces
